Kick Out The Jams - Rock N Roll Photography by Ian Laidlaw - An Exhibition
01/09/12

I believe it was Ian Laidlaw who coined the term “Sex Drugs & Ian Laidlaw” and in doing so he was tying himself to the alcoholically induced religion of so many. Rock N Roll. Even if the term had become so endemic in the mainstream vocabularies (to the point where it may have even become a total cliché) the man, like so many of our whisky toting, ciggie smoking and leather jacket wearing rock n roll gods had actually somehow managed to pull it off…

Ian is actually rock n roll. He was born into it, raised b
y it & is now totally immersed in it. From his first tattoo of a pin up girl at 6, to the regular drunken pub brawl at 11 Ian is now an ode to the persona made so famous by those before him. Not one to follow in another’s footsteps though, he took to the camera. Playing music just wasn’t his thing. Not one to wallow in his own musical inadequacies he moved on and starting shooting photos instead.

Its now 10 years on, and he’s honed the craft and become very very good at what he does. His hit list is becoming quite impressive, with over 700 bands in the archive, most Australian music festivals under his belt and a number of agencies that regularly publish his work. He is becoming one of the few premier live music photographers in this country and it is time for the first solo exhibition.

“Kick Out The Jams” will open at Yours & Owls on September 1st and run for an entire month. The exhibition showcase of an entire career to date with over 70 photos in the collection, shot from locations all around the world. All photos will be a limited edition series of 10, with the first print to be exhibited & sold at the gallery in hand made original frames.

The evening will proceed with a live performance by Mother & Son to we can party all night, get boozed & have Ian take happy snaps of everyone at his own party.
